Nubic - West Papua recently became the international spotlight including in NZ because in the easternmost part of Indonesia has just been struck by malnutrition and measles outbreak, especially in Asmat region.

This incident became a target of strong protests by some groups and individuals in NZ. Some of the most frequently protester groups are the Maori, Pasifika and the Greens. Some of their leaders regularely and clearly state their anti-Indonesian position include Catherine Delahunty and Pala Molissa.
For many times, they clearly refer Indonesians as criminals of genocide against West Papuans. Not only in writing they scorn Indonesian people all out, but also through public demonstrations both in front of the Indonesian Embassy and NZ Parliament.

Unfortunately, their criticism and protests do not resonate with their real action, whatsoever. Their real actions are a BIG ZERO that in other words can be spelled out as NATO or no actions talk only.
When these Kiwis are preoccupied with talking and claims here and there, Indonesians whom they have been ridiculing have long been busy of doing good deeds in West Papua. Many social programs like Indonesia Mengajar, SM3T and others have sent teachers and health workers to West Papua. The civilian and military government officers have been also moved to tackle health problems there.
So what have the Maori, Pacific, Pala Molissa, Catherine Delahunty, Greens and the like have done in West Papua? None! Like absolutely none!

In Indonesia, instead, West Papua has recently attracted the attention of many public figures to come and help there, ranging from the head of state to the actors and actresses.
It is Chelsea Islan, a well-respected actress who is recently very eager to do real actions in West Papua.

This February, Chelsea Islan went to Wamena, Papua. The presence of the 22-year-old actress was for the mission of education. Chelsea lined up as an ambassador of Dare to Dream 2017 (Berani Mimpi) initiated by an NGO called Wahana Visi Indonesia. The program is aimed at realizing education in Wamena, Papua.

The program that has been going on since 2017 finally ran smoothly and successfully. The success of the program was evident due to the opening of ‘Honai Belajar Anak’, a community school in Sapalek Village, Wamena Regency, West Papua. ‘Honai Belajar Anak’ is built for around 180 children in Sepalek who did not have a fixed place to study.

Previously, the children there must stay at the Village Head Office to go to study for school.
Reported by Grid.ID (17/2/2018), ‘Honai Belajar Anak’ is functioned as a learning space for children, reading room, and also a training center for West Papuan mothers.

Chelsea Islan is proud and happy to be part of this Dare to Dream Campaign.
The reason is that, in addition to helping children’s education in Papua, she can also invite all other Indonesian people to take part to improve the lives of children there in West Papua.
“(It is) The first time to Wamena and get a warm welcome from the children there, they really inspire me to be more grateful again and learn to live a simple life,” said Chelsea Islan.

In that moment, Chelsea Islan and the team gave free shoes to the children. The goal is that the children will be more eager to go to school.
“Hopefully these shoes can take them a step further and motivate them to study more diligently and study for their future,” continued Chelsea Islan.

What Chelsea Islan is doing should be a valuable lesson for individuals and groups in NZ that only real actions will affect West Papua’s progress. Their negative criticism and baseless accusations have not really had a positive impact at all. In fact, on several occasions, indigenous West Papuans are upset with the wild and baseless opinions expressed by people in NZ that are actually adversely impacting the West Papua’s image both nationally and internationally.
Otherwise, salute for Chelsea Islan! (*)
