The shootout between Indonesian
Army (TNI) and armed criminal separatist group (kksb) in Papua occurred on
April 1, 2018 when TNI tried to recapture several villages from kksb in Tembagapura
district, Papua. The fire-fight resulted
in the death of First Private Vicky Rumpasium of Batalyon Infantry 751/Raiders.
According to the Cenderawasih
military command spokesman Colonel Infantry Muhammad Aidi, the armed criminal
separatist group have occupied several villages in Tembagapura district
including Utikini, Longsoran, Kimbeli, Banti 1, Banti 2 and Opitawak.
In response, TNI have deployed
several men to secure the villages. But
the kksb was prepared and the fire-fight ensued. From the armed criminal separatist group 2
assailants were killed and dozens injured.
After the villages was retaken,
Colonel Infantry Frits Pelamonia as the Commander of the Taskforce group
reassured the villagers not to be afraid and traumatized by the incident.
All the villagers in the villages
retaken by TNI are now safe with no record of deaths.
Before they fled to the forest,
they burned several homes in the villages, according to the Cenderawasih Military
Spokesperson. The TNI had received prior
information that the kksb have burned a hospital in Utikini, elementary school
and junior high school and several homes there.
TNI and Indonesian Police had to
react to the violence committed by kksb in Tembagapura district. TNI is now pursuing the kksb. During the pursuit on April 3, 2018, the kksb
tried to burn several houses. On that
incident, the TNI was careful at aiming at the kksb fighters. The kksb left a baby in the middle of a
fire-fight. The TNI was able to save the
baby and cover the baby with blanket.
The baby was then taken back to the village.
The kksb was not pursued by the
TNI after the dramatic rescue of the baby.
